What Is RoundUp and Why Is It Dangerous?

RoundUp is a popular weed killer used by millions of people all around the world, but the active ingredient has been linked to numerous cases of cancer in RoundUp lawsuits. Victims of RoundUp exposure have developed serious illnesses, such as non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

If you were exposed to this dangerous herbicide and have developed cancer, you may be eligible to file a claim and receive financial compensation in a RoundUp cancer lawsuit.

Who Qualifies for Compensation in RoundUp Cancer Lawsuits?

In order to be eligible for financial compensation in a RoundUp lawsuit, you must have used the weed killer and developed cancer or another serious illness.

Our RoundUp lawyers will review your potential case and determine whether you are qualified to join other victims of Roundup exposure in filing a legal claim against Monsanto (now Bayer), the maker of RoundUp.

Types of Compensation for RoundUp Weed Killer Cancer Victims

If you have been exposed to RoundUp weed killer and subsequently developed cancer, a RoundUp lawyer from our legal team may be able to help you collect financial compensation for:

  • Medical bills and expenses
  • Lost wages and benefits due to an inability to work
  • Physical pain and emotional suffering
  • Punitive damages to punish the wrongdoer and deter future negligence
  • Loss of enjoyment of life
  • Wrongful death claims for families of the deceased

What Is My Case Worth?

The value of your case largely depends on the specific circumstances surrounding your cancer diagnosis after using RoundUp weedkiller.

Factors such as the severity of your illness, the duration and extent of your exposure to RoundUp, medical expenses (both current and future), loss of earnings, and the impact on your quality of life all play a critical role in determining the compensation you may be entitled to.

What Type of Cancer Is Linked to RoundUp?

The active ingredient in RoundUp is glyphosate. The International Agency for Research on Cancer, a division of the World Health Organization, has classified glyphosate as a probable cancer causing substance.

Glyphosate Exposure and Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma

According to research from the University of Washington Department of Environmental & Occupational Health Sciences (DEOHS), exposure to glyphosate, increases the risk of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma by 41%. Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma is a type of cancer that develops in the body’s lymphatic system.

Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma Symptoms

Symptoms of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma vary depending on where the cancer forms in the body, the size of the tumor, and how fast the tumor grows, but may include:

  • Pain or swelling in the lymph nodes in the abdomen, armpits, neck, or groin
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Fever
  • Night sweats
  • Tiredness
  • Itchy skin or a skin rash
  • Pain in the bones, chest, or abdomen

Be sure to contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of these symptoms.

Who Makes RoundUp?

Monsanto manufactures RoundUp. Monsanto was purchased by the German company Bayer in 2018. Monsanto has come under fire for its failure to warn consumers of the risks associated with Roundup exposure.

Is RoundUp Still Being Sold in the United States?

Yes, RoundUp is still being sold in the United States.

Monsanto/Bayer are facing numerous lawsuits over the safety of their product and its potential link to cancer. The company continues to deny any link between RoundUp and cancer; however, studies have found evidence that points to a connection between glyphosate exposure and Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

Bayer to Reformulate Glyphosate Products in 2023

In July of 2021, Bayer announced that the company and its partners will replace its glyphosate-based weed killer products in the U.S. with new formulas that rely on alternative active ingredients beginning in 2023 to help prevent future RoundUp lawsuits. These new formulas will be released after a review by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and their state counterparts.

Roundup Lawsuit Update

When Monsanto was purchased by Bayer, there were already thousands of RoundUp lawsuits in the US linking RoundUp use with the development of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. The first RoundUp cancer trial was also in 2018, and the California courts ordered Bayer/Monsanto to pay $289 million in damages because they failed to do enough to warn the plaintiff that RoundUp could cause cancer.

This has been followed by other significant wins for plaintiffs in Monsanto RoundUp lawsuits including:

  • A California jury in a Bayer RoundUp lawsuit ordered the company to pay $2 billion in punitive and $55 million in compensatory damages in a 2019 RoundUp verdict.
  • In another case, a jury awarded $80 million (later reduced to $25 million) for another plaintiff who developed non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma after using RoundUp in his yard for over 25 years.

Across the country, ongoing RoundUp lawsuits have been consolidated. The largest example of ongoing RoundUp litigation, which includes thousands of cases of RoundUp lawsuits, is a federal multidistrict litigation (MDL) and a RoundUp class action lawsuit called In re: Roundup Products Liability Litigation.
